Faced with a decision to renew a lease with a nationally owned health care provider located in a suburban location, the surgeon-client considered an unconventional option to relocate his practice in the downtown Pensacola area, separating his practice several miles away from a multi-acre medical campus surrounded by big box retailers, national franchise restaurants, and a regional shopping mall. Prior to purchasing the parcel, the site was identified by the client an devaluated for accommodating the medical practice operational requirements associated with reception, examinations, pre-surgery, surgical rooms, post-surgery recovery, and staff + patient parking. Challenged with abutting a high-speed, high traffic Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)thoroughfare that disallowed a vehicular curb cut, the vehicular ingress and egress was shifted to a less visible, neighborhood street. The entrance location was further emphasized with the incorporation of a largescale porte-cochere which provides protective covering for transportation of patients. A less visible yet highly significant design attribute is the introduction of natural light and views from the operating room transom windows to the outside “often-blue” skies for the surgeon and surgical staff. The architecture firm has been told by staff that itis a “delight” to work hours and hours in the operating room, a room that is typically windowless in the healthcare industry.
